The sight of the demolition exercise in Oshodi Lagos was a heartbreaking one to behold for owners whose properties were demolished. It is more worrying for the affected owners when the payment of compensation is yet to reach an advanced stage.

The demolition was towards the expansion of Murtala Muhammed International Airport Road.

Speaking to InsideMainland, one of the affected house owners in the demolition, Alhaji Aranseoluwa said although property owners in the area alongside other stakeholders were involved in series of discussions with the government, they are yet to get the compensation package from the government.

“The government is yet to fulfill their own end of the agreement. It was all talks from then till now. The house has now been pulled down, what next?” he said.
“Most people here expects that before the demolition will be carried out, we would have reached an advanced stage even if we are yet to be paid the monies due to us. Till now, all we hear is that they are compiling names but nothing about money has been said,” he added.

As a result of the exercise, more than 50 houses have been pulled down from the Oshodi.

Recall that Popular market, Oshodi, is considered to be one of the most notorious markets in Lagos, known for all sorts of criminal activities such as phone thefts, bag snatching and so on.

In one of the previous cases of phone theft in the market, a suspect Owoeye Lekan was arrested by officers stationed at the Oshodi market for stealing a Gionee P5 phone from a lady identified as Perpetual Onyejekwu.

Upon preliminary investigation conducted by the agency involved in the arrest, it was revealed that the suspect, always pretended to be a ‘bottled water’ hawker around Oshodi.

Miss Onyejekwu Perpetual, owner of the phone, who is a medical representative of a pharmaceutical company said the criminal snatched her ‘Gionee P5’ phone while she was busy arranging her luggage at Oshodi Bus-stop.

“I was coming from a field work at Ojuelegba, as I alighted at the bus-stop at Oshodi beside the pedestrian bridge, the criminal who pretended to be hawking ‘bottled water’ moved closer to me and forcefully snatched my phone and ran away,” she said.

Perpetual stated that it was the enforcement team of the Lagos State Task Force who heard when she shouted ‘thief’ that ran after him before he was arrested and my phone recovered.

The suspect, Owoeye Lekan confessed to having snatched the ‘Gionee P5’ phone in order to buy baby things for her wife who is carrying a four-month-old pregnancy.

He said “Since I don’t have money to buy baby things, I always dispossessed people of their valuables,” he said.
